Others do not like the idea of working with toxic materials for a variety of reasons. Is oil paint toxic? Of course it is. So are acrylics and watercolors. They all use the same pigments, so if cadmium oil paints are toxic, cadmium watercolors and acrylics are too. There are three kinds of pigments used to make paint: 1. Even today, while the most highly toxic pigments have disappeared, no pigment should be considered nontoxic. The one property that makes oil paints so safe to use is that the pigment is bound in a liquid vehicle (the drying oil). Oil paints are essentially made of two components: pigments and a vehicle; acrylic paints are composed of pigments, plus a vehicle and a binder. Vehicles are the liquid part of the paint that holds the pigments in suspension, and binders act like cement, allowing the pigments to stick together and form a paint film. Latex paint is water based, which means the main ingredient is water. The other main category of paint is oil-based, which means the main ingredient is some kind of organic solvent 2. Of the two, oil-based paint is sturdier and normally used outside or in high-humidity areas like bathrooms and kitchens 2. It is also usually more toxic when inhaled.
