The Duvernay shale is a colossal oil and gas play. In many ways the oil industry is a fashion industry, and in 2011 the exciting new model on the investment bankers’ catwalk was the Duvernay shale. Over $2 billion was spent acquiring big land packages, and the rising price per acre kept the play in the news headlines.

The Duvernay Shales have been credited as the source rock for many of the large Devonian oil and gas pools in Alberta. The most famous is The Leduc Field discovered in 1947. The Duvernay compares favorably to other North American Shale plays because of its good porosity, overall thickness, organic content and, because it is overpressured - all of which are key to a successful play. It’s more of an oil play than the western Duvernay, it’s located close to an extensive oilfield services cluster, and wells are shallower than a lot of shale plays, at depths of 2,000–2,500 metres. Similar to the Cardium, the Duvernay formation is part of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin group. Targeted for its shale gas condensate, the Duvernay is a popular target amongst Canadian exploration and production companies. The size of the prize in the giant Duvernay Shale is BIG—Canadian brokerage firm CIBC Wood Gundy said in a June 14 report the oilpatch could recover 2-5 billion barrels of liquids and 150 TRILLION cubic feet of gas. The Montney Shale Play is located in the Dawson Creek area just south of the Horn River Shale as well as the Duvernay Shale. Higher natural gas prices have caused companies to look at unconventional resource plays such as shale formations to extract natural gas. The Duvernay Shale is an emerging oil and liquids-rich gas formation in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. Many in the industry believe the Duvernay is the closest analog to the Eagle Ford
